Im Iran ist Höflichkeit mehr als nur gutes Benehmen. Und obwohl ich in der persischen Community aufgewachsen bin, hat mir erst ein Verwandtenbesuch die Augen geöffnet. Dabei musste ich aber erst einige Fettnäpfchen durchwandern.
Ich war also in den Iran gereist, um meine Verwandten zu besuchen. Es war sehr heiß und ich saß im Taxi, um zu meinem Onkel zu fahren. Während mich der Taxifahrer durch die engen Seitengassen Teherans chauffierte, bemerkte er recht schnell, dass ich kein Einheimischer war und begann sich mit mir zu unterhalten. Bei meinem Onkel angekommen, wollte ich gerade meine Geldtasche zücken, um zu bezahlen, als der nette Taxifahrer sagte: „Nein ist gut, es ist Ihrer nicht Wert, Sie brauchen nicht zu zahlen.“ Ich freute mich sehr.
Der geheime Code
Wir hatten uns ja tatsächlich gut verstanden während der Fahrt, dachte ich. Ich stieg aus, um zur offenen Tür des Stiegenhauses zu gelangen, als der Mann anfing zu hupen und plötzlich sein Geld einforderte. Ein peinlicher Moment. Dann begann es langsam bei mir duchzusickern: Höflichkeit ist eine Kunstform. Sie hat ja auch einen eigenen Namen – Ta´rof.
Ta´rof ist etwas sehr Spezielles unter Iranern, sehr subtil und immer mit einer versteckten Botschaft versehen. Mir wurde bewusst, dass Ta´rof eine höfliche Floskel ist und nicht für bare Münze genommen werden sollte. Von nun an machte ich mich daran, den Code zu entziffern.
Einerseits wird Ta´rof in der persischen Community gehegt und gepflegt, wo und wie es nur geht. Es werden richtige Ta´rof-Feuerwerke gezündet – besonders auf Hochzeiten, Familientreffen und sogar zwischen engen Freunden. Das kann schon mal einige Zeit dauern, aber so viel Zeit muss sein. Gleichzeitig finden nicht wenige Perser, dass man es mit der Höflichkeit auch übertreiben kann. Von versteckten Botschaften und Geheimcodes wollen sie nichts mehr wissen. Sie sagen dann: „Ich habe keinen Ta´rof mit Ihnen.“
„Ich bin dein Sklave“
Nichtsdestotrotz ist Ta’rof eine wichtige Errungenschaft für alle Iraner, da sie die altpersische Kultur aufrechthält und somit unter „Denkmalschutz“ steht. Dieser Verhaltenskodex ist seit Jahrhunderten geregelt und legt auf viele komplizierte Formalitäten wert. Man kann diese Redewendungen natürlich übersetzen, aber es empfiehlt sich, den Gebrauch derselben im Deutschen zu unterlassen. Schließlich könnten manche Leute Aussagen wie „Ich bin dein Sklave“ oder „Ich sterbe für dich“ allzu wörtlich nehmen.
