Wie aus Freunden Feinde wurden

Früher gingen Badran und Jamal* gemeinsam protestieren. Jetzt stehen sie einander auf Demos Auge in Auge gegenüber. An der Revolution in Syrien ist ihre Freundschaft zerbrochen.
Badran steht vor der Wiener Oper und will nicht einfach zusehen, wie Täter zu Opfern gemacht werden. Er will nicht nur danebenstehen, wenn ein Mann, der Tausende Menschen auf dem Gewissen hat, jetzt als Unschuldslamm dargestellt wird. Er will nicht tatenlos zuhören, dass für Bashar Al-Assad, den Präsident Syriens, Loblieder gesungen werden. Mehr als 70 Anhänger von Assad halten Bilder von diesem hoch und schwingen die Nationalfahne, einige singen und wollen so dem Präsidenten ihre Solidarität zeigen. Von einer Revolution wollen sie nichts wissen.
Badran demonstriert gegen die Demonstranten. „Wir müssen schweigen und sie dürfen töten?“ hat er auf ein Plakat geschrieben und es sich umgehängt. Mit einem Klebeband hat er sich den Mund verklebt, weil er zeigen will, dass das syrische Regime jede Art von freier Meinungsäußerung unterdrückt. Er geht in die Knie und hält seine verbundenen Arme hoch. Einige seiner Mitdemonstranten verteilen Informationsblätter mit der aktuellen Zahl der Toten in Syrien. Das Unrecht geht von Assad aus, wollen sie sagen, nicht von den Menschen, die in Syrien für ihre Freiheit demonstrieren.
„Du hast mich enttäuscht!“
Plötzlich erkennt Badran in der Menge der Assad-Sympathisanten einen altbekannten Freund. Es ist Jamal. Ihre Blicke treffen sich für einen Moment. Badran zieht das Klebeband von seinem Mund ab und ruft ihm zu: „Du hast mich enttäuscht, Jamal. Du hast mich enttäuscht.“
So wie die Freundschaft dieser beiden Männer ist ein ganzes Land zerbrochen. Die arabische Welt ist im Umbruch und auch Syrien wurde von der Protestwelle erfasst. Seit März wackelt der Thron des nun seit elf Jahren autoritär regierenden Präsidenten Bashar Al-Assad. Doch er lässt die Proteste brutal niederschlagen und zeigt sich nicht gewillt, zu gehen. Er tut es seinem Vater gleich, der 30 Jahre lang jeden Widerstand im Keim erstickte. Trotz der Unzufriedenheit und der Proteste hat der Präsident weiterhin Unterstützer, die sich vor allem vor einer militärischen Einmischung von außen fürchten.

Jamal hat sich zwar zu einer Seite bekannt, der des Präsidenten, aber mit seinem Namen und seinem Foto will er dafür nicht mehr einstehen. Nachdem er mit biber gesprochen hatte und sich auch fotografieren ließ, wollte er nur dann die Erlaubnis zur Veröffentlichung seines Namens geben, wenn einige seiner Zitate verändert und zusätzliche Aussagen von ihm abgedruckt werden. biber lehnte diese Forderungen ab. Jamals Reaktion veranschaulicht, dass Anhänger des Präsidenten auch in Österreich nicht davor zurückschrecken, Druck auf freie Medien auszuüben.
Flucht vor der Gewalt
Badran hat sich gegen den Präsidenten entschieden. Er engagiert sich für die Revolution und tut dies in seiner Wahlheimat Österreich. Er hat die Härte der Assad-Familie am eigenen Leib erfahren. 1981, als er 14 Jahre alt war, wurde er zwei Mal von der Polizei verhaftet. Einmal suchten die Behörden einen Attentäter und nahmen Badran fest, weil er dieselben Sportschuhe wie der Gesuchte trug. Beim zweiten Mal hielt ihn die Polizei für einen Anhänger der oppositionellen Muslimbruderschaft und schleppte ihn zum Verhör, wo er geschlagen und angeschrieen wurde. Danach schloss er sich Demonstrationen gegen Assad den Älteren in der syrischen Stadt Aleppo an. Damals wurden allein dort 10.000 Menschen durch das syrische Militär ermordet.
Fünf Jahre nach den Demos, im Jahr 1986, kam Badran nach Österreich, um hier Politikwissenschaft zu studieren. Von seinen Landsleuten, die noch immer Assad die Treue halten, ist er enttäuscht. „Sie sind Heuchler. In Syrien jubeln sie Assad zu und tolerieren alles was er tut und hier genießen sie die Vorteile einer Demokratie.“
Einer von diesen ist also Jamal. Der Präsident habe bereits Reformen durchgeführt, sagt er, ein Sturz sei nicht notwendig. Jamal kam 1975 nach Österreich, um hier Pädagogik zu studieren. Die Gewalt des syrischen Regimes hat er nicht erlebt und will den Nachrichten der westlichen Medien nur schwer glauben. „Die Lage ist nicht so, wie es in den Medien verkauft wird“, sagt er. Als er im Sommer nach Syrien reiste, besuchte er verschiedene Großstädte – von Homs und Latakia bis zu Hama und Idlib. „Es gibt Demonstrationen, ja, aber es gibt auch bewaffnete Leute, die sich unter die Demonstranten mischen und auf das Militär schießen“, sagt er. Die Demonstration bei der Oper bezeichnet er als eine Kundgebung gegen jede Form von Gewalt. In Syrien könnten Chaos und Anarchie ausbrechen, fürchtet er.
Badran und Jamal lernten einander vor dreißig Jahren in einem Wiener Café kennen und fanden einander auf Anhieb sympathisch. Jamal war damals mit Badrans Bruder eng befreundet. Sie trafen einander auf linken Demonstrationen, forderten Freiheit für die Palästinenser und schienen auch sonst die gleichen politischen Ansichten zu haben. „Über das syrische Regime haben wir nie geredet“, sagt Badran. „Es war immer ein Tabu, so haben wir das in Syrien gelernt. Ich dachte immer, dass er dem gegenüber kritisch steht, schließlich hat er mit mir immer für die Freiheit anderer Araber protestiert. Warum sollte er nicht die Freiheit unseres eigenen Volkes wollen? Die gesamte syrische Revolution basiert schließlich auf einem einzigen Wort: Freiheit.“
Neuer Stolz
Der revolutionäre Funke ist erst vor Kurzem auf Badran übergesprungen. In den vergangenen Jahren wollte er mit der syrischen Gemeinde nichts mehr zu tun haben. Wenn die Frage nach seiner Herkunft aufkam, sagte er stets, dass er Tartar aus Syrien sei, der aber Arabisch spricht. Doch als im März die Proteste anfingen, änderte er die Meinung über seine Landsleute. „Sie haben Würde bewiesen. Ich fühle mich wieder als Teil des Ganzen. Ich bin Syrer, ich kann heute dazu stehen“, sagt er mit einem zufriedenen Lächeln. Allmählich lernte er wieder andere Syrer in Wien kennen und half mit, Demonstrationen zu veranstalten.
Er rief auch Jamal an, doch dieser war zurückhaltend. „Er sagte nur: ‚Badran, seien wir vorsichtig. Es kann eine Falle sein, die die Einheit Syriens bedroht‘“, erzählt Badran heute. „Er unterstützte uns nicht, was mich stutzig machte.“ Erst als sich beiden Männer bei der Demonstration vor der Oper Auge in Auge gestanden waren, wusste Badran, auf wessen Seite sein Freund wirklich stand. Seitdem existiert kein Kontakt mehr. „Ich habe seine Nummer, aber ich rufe ihn nicht an“, sagt Badran und blickt nachdenklich zu seinem Handy.
Kerzen für die Toten
Er lernte dafür andere Syrer kennen, die seinen Standpunkt teilen. Sie treffen sich jeden Sonntag am Stephansplatz, um gegen das syrische Regime zu protestieren. Nach eigenen Aussagen sind sie eine der größten syrischen Oppositionsgruppen in Europa. Sie schwingen die syrische Fahne, verteilen Informationsblätter und zünden Kerzen für die Toten an. Auf eine mehrere Meter lange Stoffrolle schrieben sie die Namen von mehr als 1500 Toten. „Die Zahl ist weit höher, wir kommen aber kaum nach mit dem Schreiben“, sagt Leyla*.
Ein anderer Bekannter Badrans ist Ahmad*, dessen Vater sich als Politiker gegen Assad stellte und daraufhin das Land verlassen musste. Ahmad träumt von einem Heimatbesuch und schwärmt von den Märkten und historischen Plätzen in Damaskus. „Doch im Moment sind wir alle vogelfrei“, sagt Badran. „Die kennen unsere Namen, wir würden es kaum über den Flughafen hinaus schaffen. Assad muss weg. Er ist Geschichte. Es gibt kein Zurück mehr.“
Jamal streitet das Sterben vieler Syrer nicht ab, aber es sagt, es seien bewaffnete Leute, die sich unter die Demonstrationen mischen und auf das Militär schießen würden. „Es gibt Unruhestifter und kriminelle Banden, die vom Sturz des Präsidenten profitieren könnten.“
Außerdem, gebe es Leute aus dem Ausland, die Chaos anrichten wollten. Wer das ist, kann er aber nicht sagen.
Badran tut dies als Verschwörungstheorien ab. Jamals Haltung erklärt er sich damit, dass dieser für den syrischen Geheimdienst arbeiten könnte. „Vielleicht hat das Regime deshalb so viele Informationen über mich. Wahrscheinlich hat er mich all die Jahre nur ausspioniert“, sagt Badran enttäuscht und erinnert sich an ihr letztes Telefongespräch nach Beginn der Proteste. „Er meinte zu mir, Assad sei nicht wie Gaddafi. Er würde aus dem Schlamassel raus kommen, wie ein Haar aus einem Teig. Das ist eine arabische Redewendung. Alles werde so sein wie vorher.“ Daran will Badran nicht glauben. „Gott bewahre uns davor“, sagt er. „Gott bewahre!“
